Years ago, I read Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, and the story stayed with me. When I began thinking about how to open my series “Echoes of Her Culture” I felt compelled to start with this ancient art form. As I studied the role of geishas in Japanese culture, three of their most cherished virtues stood out to me: peace, beauty, and strength. From that inspiration, Virtues of a Geisha was born.

This triptych features three distinct geishas in traditional dress, each depicted in a moment emblematic of their way of life. Every panel blends the contrasting textures of polymer clay and wool. In the first panel, a geisha holds an umbrella, shielding herself from falling cherry blossoms. In the upper left corner appears the Japanese kanji for Peace (Heiwa). The second panel shows a geisha demurely hidden behind an intricately decorated uchiwa fan, alongside the kanji for Beauty (Utsukushii). The final panel captures a dancing geisha performing with traditional sensu fans, accompanied by the kanji for Strength (Chikara). Each panel is colored to reflect its virtue: blue and green for peace, tranquility, and harmony; pink and white for fleeting beauty and purity; and gold and indigo for divine power and nobility.

The work is needle‑felted with Merino sheep’s wool on a 100% wool felt backing, paired with Sculpey Premo polymer clay. Each framed piece measures 11.5”w x 14.75”h x 1.75”d and is matted in cream linen and mounted in a black wooden shadow box.

Inspired by my 2025 trip to the Isle of Skye, Cabin in Skye captures the quiet charm of the little homesteads we spotted across the island—each one hugged by patchwork fields, grazing sheep or cattle, and those endless skies that seem to stretch forever. This mixed-media piece brings that peaceful corner of Scotland to your wall.

A tiny world rises from the forest floor, where mushrooms tower over moss, stones, and delicate woodland growth. Rendered in wool with layers of soft texture and earthy detail, Among Quiet Things invites the viewer into the overlooked places beneath our feet—a place that feels ancient, peaceful, and just a little bit magical.

Each element is built through needle felting, using variations in texture and depth to give the landscape an almost sculptural presence. The warm, muted palette and intimate scale evoke the feeling of discovering a hidden patch of woodland and stopping long enough to really see it.

American Barn Owl captures the quiet presence of one of nature’s most distinctive birds. Created in needle-felted wool, the portrait builds the owl’s soft plumage through layers of cream, gold, warm brown, and white fibers, with careful attention given to the subtle markings that make each feather seem to emerge from the surface.

The owl’s characteristic heart-shaped face and dark, watchful eyes form the focal point, while the tactile nature of wool lends a softness particularly suited to the bird’s almost silent presence.

Both detailed and atmospheric, American Barn Owl celebrates the delicate beauty of a remarkable nocturnal hunter—a bird that can appear at once serene, mysterious, and completely alert.
