Understory invites the viewer into a small, imagined world beneath the forest floor. A tiny figure rests beneath the sweeping cap of an oversized mushroom, transforming an ordinary woodland form into a place of shelter and quiet refuge.
Created in needle-felted wool, the mushroom is built with soft layers of cream, blush, mossy green, and earth tones. Hundreds of small, felted markings travel across its surface, suggesting spores, lichen, and the beautiful irregularities found in nature. The dimensional figure beneath gives the piece an almost storybook quality, leaving the viewer to imagine who this little traveler might be—and what brought them here.
